Singer-actress Monali Thakur, who is part of the latest episode of MTV Unplugged, says that it’s always wonderful to jam with talented singers.

National Award-winning singer Monali Thakur who earlier joined the #makingthefuture campaign, will soon be seen in the 7th season of Royal Stag Barrel Select MTV Unplugged. The singer will appear on their latest episode which will air on January 13. “It’s been amazing and wonderful. I always call the experience of being part of the project as being in ‘paradise’. Usually, we are singing other’s compositions and other than my live concerts, I cannot interpret a song in my own way. Here, I can do that. It’s also wonderful to jam with talented musicians and I am glad that I got a chance to do so.”

The singer will also sing a ghazal originally sung by Asha Bhosle titled Salona Sa Sajana. Says she, “I have mixed the song with another song of mine. They are from two different genres but then music has no language and boundaries. It’s blended beautifully and I hope people like my interpretation because singing after Ashaji kind of gets scary.”

It’s always exciting for a singer to sing an unplugged version because you are not following the conventional path, we point out, to which the Yeh Moh Moh Dhage and Khol De Baahein singer says, “Music is all about being unplugged because we are using the organic instruments. And that’s why it’s paradise because music comes from our heart and emotions. The way we can do organically, we cannot do it digitally. The singer’s own interpretations and emotions are there. When real musicians jam, the music has to be good if they are in the right frame. When minds come together to create something, the right kind of music is created.”

The versatile singer believes that there are no restrictions for a singer when they are working as a recording artist. “Just because we are singing someone else’s composition or because I haven’t composed it, doesn’t mean I cannot make my own music. Having said that, it also depends on composer to composer and project to project. There are composers who give me a song and want me to decorate it. So it all depends on the person you are working with,” she adds.

Monali will soon be back as a judge on India’s Rising Star with Shankar Mahadevan and Diljit Dosanjh. The reality show will go on air later this month on Colors. “There’s such great talent on the show. I have been part of another reality show, I moved from there to here and I know how much of editing and effects go into making of such shows. But in this one, because it’s a live show, there’s no such thing. The contestants are not just talented singers but great personalities too. I have been inspired by some of them because they are extremely strong and talented too. I am waiting for the show to go on air,” says Monali who made her acting debut with Nagesh Kukunoor’s Lakshmi.
The episode will be aired on MTV on January 13 at 8 pm.
