It’s not easy to carry forward the legacy of a famous father. But Navraj Hans, son of famous singer Hans Raj Hans, takes it positively. Navraj, who is an actor-singer and has a few projects to his credit, says, “It’s definitely a big task carrying his name forward. It’s not an easy job and I keep thinking, ‘Yaar, such a big name and it’s a huge responsibility. But I take this pressure in a positive manner. Having said that, I feel lucky to be born into a family where my father is already a legend.”
Navraj says that even though music was a part of his growing up years, he wasn’t too keen about taking up music initially. “I didn’t sing too often because I wasn’t keen on becoming a singer. I used to practise occasionally,” he says. So when did he realise his passion for music and he replies, “I had gone abroad to study and was all alone there. I used to listen to sad songs and relate to them. Slowly, I started having fun listening to them and started singing seriously.”
Did he get any piece of advice from his father before joining the entertainment industry? “He was like, ‘Yeh Ishq Nahi Aasan Bus Itna Samajh Lijiye. Ek Aag Ka Darya Hai Aur Doob Kar Jana Hai’. What he meant was that it’s not easy to survive in the industry,” says Navraj.
He adds that getting a break wasn’t an easy journey. “I don’t know why people feel that it’s easy for us to get a break. If you do not have talent, no one can do anything. I first worked on myself and my music for five to six years and then started meeting people in the industry. Therefore, it took me a lot of time to crack it,” he says adding, “Maybe I could have got an easy break but I didn’t want that because if I wasn’t prepared or talented enough, nobody would have given me work later. Also, when you struggle on your own the journey is even more memorable and you survive for a long time.”
The singer recently lent his voice to the recreated version of Chhote Chhote Peg (Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety), which was originally sung by his father. The song composed by Honey Singh is already a chartbuster. Navraj says that it was definitely difficult to sing his father’s song. “It was a challenge but I took it up. I had called my father for his blessings before signing the song. He is so happy with the recreated version and people are also loving it,” he says. Apart from this, Navraj has sung the title track of Veerey Ki Wedding and a rock music kind of song for Daas Dev.
As for collaborating with Honey Singh, who too has made a comeback after three years, Navraj says, “I am a fan of Honey Singh. It’s a good thing that I could collaborate with him because I like his work.”
Navraj has acted in Punjabi films and has sung a few Bollywood songs like Rail Gaddi (Tutak Tutak Tutiya), Raj Karega Khalsa (A Flying Jatt) and Jatt Jaguar (Mubarakan). And how is he balancing his acting and music careers? Navraj says he gives greater priority to music because it’s much more important to him. “I got film offers because of my music so I can never treat music as secondary,” he explains.
He says that there is no denying that acting gets more eyeballs but it all boils down to passion. “It depends on what I am more passionate about or what I enjoy most. Personally, I enjoy live performances more,” he says.
