Upen Patel, whose Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha releases today, talks about director Suneel Darshan, and why he wasn’t insecure over the presence of Shiv Darshan in the film.

I can do too many films but I don’t want to, because I want to do the right films,” says Upen Patel, who will be seen in Suneel Darshan’s Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha, which releases today (June 30).

During the promotions, when asked about why he doesn’t do too many films, he said, “I do not believe in doing one film a year. Look at actors like Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, they take long gaps between each project but no one asks them why they take breaks. At the end of the day, the audience needs to have faith in you.”

He says that despite the less number of films, he has worked with some of the biggest filmmakers in the Indian film industry. “I have worked with Abbas-Mustan, Shankar, Rajkumar Santoshi among others. I am blessed to have worked with them. I have never worked with small filmmakers or production houses. I have always chosen my work wisely. The audience knows me and filmmakers have faith in me which matters a lot,” says Upen, adding that there are a lot of factors that go into signing a film — script, role, subject, etc.

Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha also stars Shiv Darshan and Natasha Fernandez. The actor says that the film is a complete family entertainer because of the good actors, drama and great music.

“I have grown up watching Suneel Darshan’s films like Raja Hindustani, Dhadkan, so I was excited to be a part of this film,” he said, adding, “The music is one highlight of the film; it will take you back to the ’90s because it’s got the feel of that era.”

He said that he plays a Casanova, macho and flamboyant kind of character. “Sunny has a varied emotion graph. He is a kind of person who keeps others’ happiness before his. There are very few people in today’s world who can do that because everyone is thinking about themselves. In fact, I had asked Suneel ji why he wrote a character that doesn’t exist anymore. Suneel ji told me that people come to watch films to forget their problems. The film should give them hope,” he says.

The actor says that he is grateful to the filmmaker for believing in him.
The film is a home-production for Shiv. Was he worried that the focus will be on him as his father was directing it?

“I will be honest. I heard the script and asked Suneel ji , ‘Are you making the film for Shiv?’ He said, ‘No. I am making the film for myself because I am also making a comeback. It’s a love triangle and the focus will be on all three characters’,” says Upen.

He added that he has an advantage over Shiv because he has already worked with Suneel in Shakalaka Boom Boom in 2007. “I have a chemistry with Suneel ji. Having said that, Shiv is a very professional boy. He never behaved like it’s his home production. The film mattered to him the most. For Suneel ji, relationships matter the most,” he signs off.
